It went really well with the Chimay beer (but honestly... what doesn't)!<br /><br />Cooking time 4-6 hours on low. I used Turkey bacon as a substitute for normal bacon rather than omitting altogether so a smoky-base flavor would still come out. Added bonus, we found another use for kale and butternuts rather than our usual recipes!<br /><br />I barely remembered to snap this picture - it was my second helping! Most ski resorts require you to be at least 4 (and she is only 3). We've had zero snow, but it's been cold enough to make snow. <br /><br><br />Her first ski experience could have turned out  a myriad of ways - all shaping her future skiing agenda. And amazingly she did great! BOTH times. First, a quick lesson at Northstar then some bunny slopes at Squaw (see below). We rented a house in Hanalei, in between beach and quaint Hanalei town. It was gorgeous! Kauai kicks Maui's ass (in my opinion) but still doesn't hold a candle to the amazing lagoons around French Polynesia. <br />I actually thought I would update my blog while we were gone, HA! Not just the shininess of it, or the token of a necklace around her holder, but really LOVEs all forms of the precious adornments. She knows exactly how to get into my jewelry organizer (trust me I have made only the costume easily accessible) and I have caught her out of the corner of my eye knowing exactly where the bangles go and admiring them on her arm. <br /><br />Well yesterday after a nap, she wouldn't let me continue with her lunch until she got a ring off my finger. She tried pulling both my wedding bands on my left hand and the plastic ring on my right at the same time (greed!) until I gave up the plastic one. The pictures I snapped can only give a glimpse, she put it on her hand and was ecstatic and completely pleased!! We caught it early enough, two days of antibiotics and she is definitely getting back to acting like herself again just with raspy breath and a cough.<br />Friday night she was so wiped she could barely eat dinner and in fact decided to nap through it (notice enough hair to pull together the tiniest pigtail! The other day a swivel chair came out from under her (I normally don't coddle her, but I looked like it took her breath away) so I jumped over to her and she literally pushed away my out reached hand as she was getting back up to go after the chair again. I told Bob, I'm taking off Friday and skiing!<br />So we set out Thursday after work and it was probably our most treacherous drive TO Tahoe yet. 18 wheelers lined the side of the road hunkering down for the night, a tour bus skidded out and blocking a lane, never mind the normal yahoos at the chain check in compact sedans being snickered at as they have to pull aside.<br /><br /><center><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/kari.briski/TheBriskiBlog?authkey=Gv1sRgCN_G3orBvtCUrwE#5575284372084713186"><img border="0" height="281" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_LaIoI4TjPUo/TV9jmOflZuI/AAAAAAAABFE/XTM7UUcdb4E/s288/7.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="210" /></a></center><br />I've said it before, thank goodness for our all wheel drive "Tahoe Mobile". We didn't get in until midnight but we got in safe!<br />It snowed all night and never let up, even as I type this. I really can't describe the ski conditions, and my iphone pictures do not illustrate just how DEEP the snow is. From the chair lift, people looked like little plow machines plowing along with snow up to their waists! I even witnessed, from the chair lift, a guy fall and get buried to the point where only the tips of his skis stuck out. He called for help and when I got off the lift I had to notify ski patrol to go help him!! Another time a boarder jumped into a ditch and just stuck there. He just sat for a while defeated, until he gave a friendly wave to us folks gawking from the lift telling us he was okay. People were falling and getting stuck left and right!<br />My mantra was "Lean back, deep knee bend, keep my tips AND my speed up." (I really did say this to myself!) If you slowed or stopped your poles were almost useless in the deep deep powder. <br />It worked! I did good today if I do say so myself! At least there were a lot more skiers at Squaw compared to NorthStar so I didn't have to feel so "retro" lol.<br />Days like today, I really miss skiing with Bob, and having him there to share the weather, scenery and atmosphere, but I am thankful to have the chance to ski at all! As of right now the snow still hasn't stopped and I'm excited for Bob to have as much fun tomorrow as I did today! <br />Enjoy my pics, I'm sure the last thing most of you on the east coast want to do is look at snow! I can't help but feel a little sorry for the current and future children of Picture and Challen. We bought The Boon which has smooth castors and a pneumatic lift, so she can either sit at our kitchen bar or the table. I love it!<br />It's also a big hit with her cousin Gabby who likes to be spun and rolled around in it. Going to Tahoe the week before Christmas definitely puts you in high holiday spirits.&nbsp;It's especially nice because&nbsp;living in California as displaced East Coast citizens,&nbsp;this trip&nbsp;guarantees some sort of snow that we get nostalgic for in the middle of December. Well... this year was the deepest snow pack in December for Tahoe in 17 years!! <br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">We usually stay in Squaw Valley Village, but this year we decided to stay in NorthStar village (still North Lake Tahoe and not far from Squaw). There is a big ice skating rink in the middle of the village with huge fire side cabanas lining the rink, a bar and live entertainment - it's truly a winter wonderland and the perfect apres ski atmosphere! The dad laughed and said, who knows, maybe by the time Ayla is old enough to ski, it will be back in fashion. We're still getting back on schedule from the trip back east. <br />Once Bob put the lights on the tree, it only took me 2 movies to finish decorating it: Christmas Vacation and Love Actually. You know (side thought), we finally watched Four Christmases last night, after several people telling me that this movie reminds them of us. I appreciate that someone finally tried to capture what our holidays can be like in a movie, even if it was a caricature. Although I'd be lying if I didn't admit that Bob and I had almost broken up a couple times after driving to and fro x amount of holidays all across Pgh. And I'm still amazed how strong our relationship is after "40 Thanksgivings" (4 Thanksgivings x 10 years) but i digress... So we decided to have her wear&nbsp;the spider&nbsp;on Sunday (actual Halloween). I think&nbsp;the costume arriving late may have been a blessing in disguise because it was so big and unwieldy on her that she only wore it for about 1 hour at our neighbor's party.
